Ikhwanonline website editor-in-chef is being hounded, and declares a sit-in in syndicate of journalists

    Cairo, march 13, 2008,

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information denounced today the continuation of the police campaign launched against media professionals who belongs to the Muslim Brotherhood as it included the union journalist Abdul-Galil Al-Sharnouby, the editor-in-chef of Ikhwanonline website as a police force broke into his yesterday at dawn, yet by coincidence, he was out of house at that time. After knowing about his arrest order, he rushed to the syndicate of journalists in which he still keeping up a sit-in so far.

Meanwhile, Khaled Hamza, the managing editor of Ikhwanweb (the English website of Muslim Brotherhood) is still detained since last February 20th. In this way, one of the two directors of Muslim Brotherhood websites became detained and the other is now wanted!

The systematic police campaign against the media professionals of Muslim Brotherhood aims to disable them informatively in regards to propaganda for their candidates running into local elections which would be held by next 8th of April. This campaign involves detaining scores of brotherhood members without any legal proofs, just to prevent them of running into elections.

The current elections are really important because of the constitutional amendment of article 76 concerning presidency candidacy. Article 76, after amendment, states that certain number of local councils members in addition to another number of People's Assembly members must provide their recommendation for any candidate, as an essential condition to accept presidency candidacy, noting that that the next presidential elections will be held in 2011.

The Arabic Network declaring its solidarity with journalists and media professionals targeted by this fierce campaign, ensures that freedom of expression either on the internet or in printed press, is a genuine right for every citizen which as emphasized by the constitution & law. The network is also calling the state to stop all kinds of repression and systematic violations against such freedoms.
